Bwin Loses in German Court

Bwin is the largest gambling company in Europe offering its players a variety of forms of gambling activities, including online casino game play, sportsbook, poker and games. The Austrian company is licensed in Gibraltar which should allow it to operate freely in the European Union. However, last year, the sixteen German states basically banned online gambling by restricting online activities and advertising. This action forced Bwin and other gambling companies out of the lucrative German market.

Bwin sued in court to try to have the gambling ban reversed. Bwin claims that its Gibraltar license entitles the company to operate within German borders. In addition, it also holds a license issued by the former East German government that it obtained before East and West Germany were unified.

The court ruled against Bwin and upheld the gambling ban. Bwin says that it will continue to fight to operate in the German market. The company, along with the EU officials, believes that the German online gambling ban is contrary to the policies of the EU and violates the concept of free trade. The EU has also threatened legal action against Germany if they continue to uphold the online gambling ban.
