RGT Levy to Become Mandatory?
Will an RGT funding levy become permanent? That’s up to the UK gambling operators.
As part of the new provisions of the Gambling Act, gambling operators in the United Kingdom are supposed to donate funds for the provision of the Responsibility in Gaming Trust (RGT). This entity exists to provide research on gambling addiction problems and to do the necessary research, education and provision of treatment opportunities.
The Gambling Act of 2005 requires the UK’s 3800 gaming operators to contribute to the RGT. The RGT is complaining saying that only thirteen percent of the gambling operators are fulfilling their obligations to contribute. The remainder are not sending in their voluntary contributions and because of this the RGT is have financial difficulties.
The RGT sent out a letter this week to the gambling operators telling them that unless they fulfill their obligations under the Gambling Act with voluntary contributions, a mandatory levy will be inevitable. RGT Director Malcolm Bruce has stated that the government ministers have made it clear that they will use the powers available to them to guarantee the necessary funding for the RGT.
The message sent to the gambling operators is clear. Pay up on a voluntary basis or face a new tax that will compel the funding required for the RGT.
